DOOR #1 OR DOOR #2?
I do get tired of this game show. The Alito nomination is another round of the same thing.
Behind Door #1: Standing up for the unborn.
Behind Door #2: Every other issue that matters to me, from war to poverty to civil rights to worker's rights to the environment to . . .
And I get to choose one or the other. Always one or the other.
When it comes to electing a president, I choose Door #2. In the interest of supporting my pro-LIFE sentiments, I want a president who's right on the war issue, because a president can start a war pretty much unilaterally. If that leaves it to We The People to try to end abortion, I think I can do more to influence that than I can to stop us from invading __________________ (Iran? Syria? NoKo? Cuba? France?).
I've discovered that there are some fringe, haven't-got-a-prayer candidates who are pro-life liberals, so it's nice to have that option. But I would love to see our country move past the two-party monopoly system. I want more doors to choose from.
I feel this way also, only in my case, I have a few things behind each door, and a couple that aren't behind either. It is frustrating.

you're in l.a. i'm in fresno. we've got an election this week.
i admit, i still haven't read the propositions. i've skimmed some info, but haven't read enough.
so, prop 73. door one says it protects life, door two says that it'll cause illegal "back alley" abortions. how do you see these doors?
granted, i generally think that back alley argument is a load of crap. but, again, i haven't read the whole prop so i'm not really sure about it all.

In general, any time there's any law that regulates abortion, the hardline pro-choicers will claim that it will cause women to seek illegal abortions and self-abortions.
For those of us who consider abortion to be killing, it almost sounds like blackmail: "If you try to stop me from killing this person, I'll attempt it in a more dangerous way and possibly injure or kill myself in the process." The implication then is that I would be responsible for the harm they do to themselves because I wouldn't help them in the process. No, I am not advocating that you do something dangerous to yourself; I'm hoping that we can help you work out a non-violent solution to your situation.
Prop. 73, in any case, requires that a minor's parents be notified 48 hours before she obtains an abortion, and there is an judicial bypass option for girls from who need it. Who knows whether it would actually prevent abortions, it would just assure that parents know when their daughter is about to have the procedure done. I definitely believe that even if abortion remains legal, it makes sense for parents to be involved in the important issues of their children's lives.
